Crazy times, the opportunity to pay more than high season prices at the likes of Stardome & Lanna.

And, Gassan Marina, anybody played there in the last few years?Excuse my cynicism but I guess that’s their way of trying to get people to play at Lake City at the 800+ price?

Great deals for the major courses.Sad to see Highland opted out, good but not that good.

I will be supporting and recommending those that really offer the deal.

“Fore” – or fore! -Why?

April 20th, 2012

The question came up on the course this morning and nobody knew where it came from:

“Fore” – actually, fore! – is a word of warning yelled out by a golfer who has hit an errant shot. If your shot is in danger of hitting or landing very close to another player or group of players on the golf course (for instance, if you slice a ball into an adjoining fairway), you should yell “fore!” to warn players to watch out.

Yelling “fore!” is considered good etiquette, but it’s not just a courtesy to other golfers, it can serve to prevent injury. After all, a golf ball striking a person can do serious damage.

Perhaps the most common usage of fore is when golfers hit the ball farther than expected, or when they play their stroke without realizing that there is a golfer up ahead who might be in danger. Next would be with hooks and slices on tight golf courses, where holes are close together and a curving shot might fly into or run into an adjoining fairway.

At professional tournaments, where holes are tightly lined by fans, it’s common to hear tour pros yell “fore right” or “fore left,” letting the fans known which direction the ball is traveling. That way, the fans on the left side or right side of the hole know to take cover.

From where?

“Fore” is another word for “ahead” (think of a ship’s fore and aft). Yelling “fore” is simply a shorter way to yell “watch out ahead” (or “watch out before”). It allows golfers to be forewarned, in other words.

The British Golf Museum cites an 1881 reference to “fore” in a golf book, establishing that the term was already in use at that early date (the USGA suggests the term may have been in use as early as the 1700s). The museum also surmises that the term evolved from “forecaddie.”

A forecaddie is a person who accompanies a group around the golf course, often going forward to be in a position to pinpoint the locations of the groups’ shots. If a member of the group hit an errant shot, the thinking goes, they may have alerted the forecaddie by yelling out the term. It was eventually shorted to just “fore.”

A popular theory is that the term has a military origin. In warfare of the 17th and 18th century (a time period when golf was really taking hold in Britain), infantry advanced in formation while artillery batteries fired from behind, over their heads. An artilleryman about to fire would yell “beware before,” alerting nearby infantrymen to drop to the ground to avoid the shells screaming overhead.

So when golfers misfired and send their missiles – golf balls – screaming off target, “beware before” became shortened to “fore.”

April 2nd, 2012

Played at Gold Canyon this morning and the air was thick and breathing was a little laboured despite the rain a couple of days earlier.Fairways are in good nick but they are currently coring the greens and it was almost impossible to putt with any accuracy but guess it will be OK in a week or two and for 800baht inclusive best value around.

On the way back just south of Lamphun we saw this:

Not sure why it is in English as well as Thai, perhaps to show the foreign media the Thai’s are doing something?

Birdie at Lanna!

March 23rd, 2012

I do get the occasional birdie but this one was on the fourth hole of the racecourse course.

It was with a 7 wood from about 210 yards after a drive that left me on the left of the fairway in light rough.

It was literally a birdie, as I struck the ball a bird flew up in front of me about 50 yards ahead, hit the bird full on and left it doing cartwheels down the course. Sadly it was so badly injured I had to put it out of it’s misery. I was somewhat squeamish but when I asked my playing partner (Another aged Brit) to do the dirty deed he ran away!

Anyway, one birdie I am not proud of!

Lanna-nearly low season sport day prices up!

March 22nd, 2012

Now that most of the Japanese & Koreans have gone home looks like Lanna are out to screw those that would patronize the course for the rest of the year by changing sports day prices from 500baht including caddy to 700baht including caddy.

A kick in the teeth for the regulars and not very customer savvy! A very typically Thai response to having less players/tourists etc-put the prices up!

If you don’t mind teeing off after 12.30pm a much better deal and course by along way is Inthanon 700baht including caddy fee.

Helping to clear the air-not!

March 17th, 2012

Unconcerned citizen doing his bit for the environment behind the 8th hole at Hang Dong golf course 17th March. (-:

And for an encore, today the 19th March behind the 9th hole. Not too clear unfortunately with camphone but it was a good blaze with plenty of smoke!

Want to play golf in the smog-Thailands burning!

March 11th, 2012

This video shows how appalling conditions are at the moment in the north of Thailand thanks to uncontrolled burning and then goes on to show what the weather should be like.

This uncontrolled burning occurs just about every year from December often through to April with Feb/March being the worst months with very little done to combat it by the authorities.

Lanna sports day attracts a few people!

February 11th, 2012

We went early on Friday to avoid the rush. Arrived at the par 3 tee off at 6.20am,still dark!

There was already a 2 ball and a four ball in front of us so we actually teed off in relative light.

The four ball in front of us were Japanese and they were almost as quick as us,a 2 ball, very little waiting on the tees.Thank goodness they weren’t Korean-maybe you know what I mean.

We completed the first 9 holes just after 8 am and moved to the racecourse course. There were already a few waiting to tee off,did I say a few,see the pics!

It was just crazy,30+ people waiting to tee off. We guessed it would be 30 to 45 minutes before we drove off!

Fortunately a Japanese couple were ahead of us in the queue which was mainly groups of 4 or 5 and we were asked to join them.Very nice people and spoke good English so communication was no problem.
So we played with Tanaka san and Tanaka san (Hope I got that right Mr & Mrs Tanaka?)

Mr Tanaka is in the picture of the tee along with my golf partner (an aged Brit (-:) and a few others.(sorry about the light, used a cameraphone to take the pics.)

Great company but it was a real chore playing at snails pace with groups of 4 and 5 ahead 10 mins wait at most tees. Not something I will want to repeat in the near future.

Roll on the low season!
