Changes in the rules of golf

Changes in the rules of golf

The 2016 Rules of Golf changes have been revealed by the R&A and USGA, and include a number of alterations.

The 2016 Rules of Golf changes take effect on January 1st 2016, and come after a four-year review cycle and a collaborative effort between The R&A and the USGA. The new updates also come after CONGU announced plans to change the way handicaps are calculated, making it a busy few months for golf’s ruling bodies.

The most significant 2016 Rules of Golf changes include:

If your ball moves at address there is no longer an automatic penalty
Rule 18-2b (Ball Moving after Address) has been withdrawn. This means that if a ball at rest moves after you address it, you are no longer automatically deemed to have caused the ball to move. A one-stroke penalty under Rule 18-2 will still be applied only when the facts show that the player has caused the ball to move.

GM verdict: This is a great common sense move. If you’ve done nothing to cause your ball to move it seems unfair to be penalised.

No longer an automatic DQ for submitting an incorrect card
A new exception has been introduced to Rule 6-6d (Wrong Score for Hole) to provide that a player is not disqualified for returning a lower score for a hole than actually taken as a result of failing to include penalty strokes that the player did not know were incurred before returning their card. Instead, the player incurs the penalty under the Rule that was breached and must add an additional penalty of two strokes for the scorecard error. In all other cases in which a player returns a score for any hole lower than actually taken, the penalty will continue to be disqualification.

David Rickman of the R&A explains why they changed the Rules of Golf

GM verdict: This has been introduced after a few high profile incidents of players signing score without knowing they’d incurred a penalty. Possibly one for the Tour pros!

Modification of penalty for use of artificial devices or equipment
The penalty for a player’s first breach of Rule 14-3 (Artificial Devices, Unusual Equipment and Abnormal Use of Equipment) during the round has been reduced from disqualification to loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play. The penalty for any subsequent breach of Rule 14-3 will continue to be disqualification.

Prohibition on anchoring
As announced in May 2013, the new Rule 14-1b (Anchoring the Club) prohibits anchoring the club either “directly” or by use of an “anchor point” in making a stroke. The penalty is loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play.

Discussing the changes, David Rickman, executive director Rules and Equipment Standards at The R&A, told GM: “We continually look at ways we can improve and clarify the Rules of Golf. The R&A and the USGA collaborate closely and we consult with our respective national and international advisory members to produce a code of Rules that is relevant to all golfers around the world.”

Printed copies of the new Rules of Golf are now available from the USGA and The R&A. More detailed information on the 2016 Rules of Golf changes and the complete Rules of Golf can also be found at randa.org.

Early morning not the best time to go as the range faces directly in to the sun until around 11 am Will not be pleasant in the hot season, the other downside is they play loud music for some strange reason!

The North Hill course itself was almost deserted, probably because the green fee is 1500 baht for Thai residents, 4 times the price of the nearby Hangdong  golf course which is currently very busy but suffering from complete lack of control.

Gassan Legacy

Gassan Legacy

Not too long ago what was Gassan Lake City had become a laughing stock among the local golfers. Green fees as low as THB200, may find a caddy , not sure if the course was so waterlogged,it was at times unplayable.

No More, what was Gassan Lake City is now Gassan Legacy and it’s somewhat pheonix like, rising from the ashes. It has become a golf course to challenge the best in the north of Thailand. Major remodelling, pricing to fit most budgets, particularly for Thai residents. Still a work in progress but will only improve from what our group saw today, the consensus was – excellent!

Lots of water so you need to be accurate, and some long drives required on some holes to stay dry, even off the white tees, a fun challenging course for any level of golfer.

Very simply the only value for the top courses for Thai residents is Inthanon by a country mile with THB1500 Inclusive Green Fee/Caddy Fee & Golf Cart for the remainder of November.

And not too bad for December onward.

The joke is North Hill Chiangmai (Mezzanine), why would anyone want to play there, especially at those prices for a converted 9 hole course?

Stardome Golf Club

Quite like Stardome Golf Club, quite a challenge and plenty of water for even slightly wayward shots.

Played this week all was fine until you get to the greens. I think there was more sand on the greens than in the bunkers, almost impossible to putt, not that good at the best of times, but didn’t need that, ridiculous.

Now, one of our pet hates is dual pricing, in many cases it is hidden and most are not aware. Not Stardome Golf Club:

Star2

Clearly states a different and higher price for “Foreigners” , not much, but higher. As I said, quite like the course but will not be going back if this practice continues, I am sure they won’t care but it’s my principles and I simply don’t like it.

If you do bite the bullet and decide to go these young ladies may add to your “golfing” pleasure. The famous Stardome refreshers:

Need refreshing?

Refresher

Will still continue to use the driving rang, a superb facility and the same price for all.

Our driving range is the biggest driving range in the northern part of Thailand. It is also fully equipped with the most modern facilities for golf driving with the longest driving range. There are total of 96 drive lanes, with a length of 300 yards, with a real golf course simulator. There are high quality automatic golf balls feeders, hydrid air circulation system, Golf Pro to assist golfers on basic knowledge in golfing, and complete golf sets to serve our customers.

Our hours of operation are from 07.00 am. – 22.00 am. In the driving range building, we offer free wireless zone, 40 inch LCD Television on which our customers can enjoy sports live broadcasted. For the safety of customers’ belongings, we have lockers available.”

Gymkhana- It’s OK to have 6 players in a group!

If you would think there would be anywhere in Chiangmai or even Thailand you would think that Gymkhana would use their brains and realise that that five or six players in a group is nuts and especially on a short 9 hole course. Nothing worse than slow play and this stupidity encourages it.

This is from the horses mouth:

“4. The Committee hereby informs the all the members that the rule of 6 Members per Group playing style is still effective as announced by the Club. Should there be any alteration, the Committee will notify the members as soon as possible.”

As it specifies “members”,mainly those who pull their own carts I guess (no tip for the caddies) and make it even slower. One of the main reasons myself and many others no longer play there.

I don’t think there are any other countries in the world where you can play 6 persons in a group even on full length 18 holes golf courses, correct me if I am wrong.

It would appear that the guy who was trying to bring the club in to the present day and do away with their archaic ideas has been forced out?

Koolpunt Golf double their prices!

If you check their website and go under the misapprehension that you will be paying THB 600 inclusive of caddy fee to walk the 2 x 9 hole course you will be in for a nasty surprise.

In their wisdom the management have doubled the price to THB 1200 inclusive of caddy fee for walking 18 holes.

That most certainly counts me and most of those I know out of going as the course is nothing special and no comparison to the other 9 hole courses all of which are very much cheaper,as are a couple of the main 18 hole courses,Gold Canyon in particular.

Gassan Marina – promotion for Thai residents.

Gassan Lake City is closed for renovation for 2 months opening in December we believe.

In the meantime Gassan Marina is offering green fee + caddy fee (walking) at 650baht. Or green fee, caddy fee and golf cart for 1000baht.

It is probably 3 years or more since I last played there and it was a mess in general, apart from the flooding.

Worth one visit at those prices just to check it out.

Will post back.

Lack of courtesy at Hangdong again, but this time Farang!

But this time, surprisingly it was 3 Farang who decided it would be OK to walk to hole 7 in front of a twosome already on hole 6 and our twosome on the green at hole 5.

It was obviously going to cause a problem and both my partner and I thought it had to be Thais who do this on a regular basis,we were wrong,it was 3 Farang, and regular Hangdong players who should know better.

And with only 3 holes to play they managed to disrupt us and the 2 Koreans ahead of us. Disgusted we walked past them on hole 8 (They did offer a half hearted guilty  “you can play through”) and joined the Koreans for the last hole.

The Koreans asked if the guys were Russians as they felt they were so rude! (I guess Koreans think Russians are rude!) :Happy-Grin:

Anyway, if they had used a little of the gray matter between the 3 of them they could have simply walked to hole 6 and teed off behind us, let us continue our game without disruption and complete our last 4 holes and nobody would have been pissed off.

For whatever reason they chose not to,I guess they probably also ignored their caddies who must have told them. :Weary:

High season is nearly upon us and it will be the incoming contingent of Koreans who will join the Thais and some Farang marching to hole 7 to disrupt the flow of the game in their five  & six balls!

Perhaps the “starter” will do his job! :I-Wish:

When we finished our 18 holes the first tee was packed with around 20-25 people so I guess the the Farang got their come uppance!
